with these outstretched arms:

fathom (f:) is a free community space focused on the art of storytelling through book making and sharing. fathom is also a living, growing archive, a library, of contemporary creative work with an emphasis on local, emerging work. The collection consists of printed, sharable material such as chapbooks, zines, short run published work, handmade artist books, magazines, publications from local publishers and presses, and so much more. Come, relax and read, imagine and make, share space with us and tell your story! All are welcome.

We are currently accepting submissions.*

This library hopes to be an accessible, inclusive community of creative thinkers, and to strive to broaden the range of education and curiosity around art by careful consideration of location, outreach, spatial design, and a focus on collaboration.

*note: original work accepted by and donated to fathom will become part of its permanent collection, and will not be returned.

our origins:

I was part of an inspiring and new-ish MFA program called Image Text Ithaca and studied the intersection of photography and writing. My love for books, and more specifically, for photo and art books, only grew and grew in the midst of fellow book lovers and makers. On a class trip to CDMX, I encountered the public and independent library, Aeromoto - an art library focused on community, and being an ever-growing archive of contemporary Mexican work. Deeply inspired, fathom came to be in the fall of 2018 (ten months after her visit), and has been popping up here and there ever since…

Many thanks to all that have inspired and supported this project as it keeps becoming!
